Scorpius Dance Theatre presents: David + Lisa

• Sun, May 4th, 2008

Putting the ‘edge’ in the proverbial ledge, Scorpius Dance Theatre doesn’t need any talking down. In fact, they are quite comfortable there, artistically speaking, as they bring yet another innovative dance production to the Valley with “An Unusual Love Story” David+Lisa, May 15 through 25, 2008, at the Phoenix Theatre’s Little Theatre.

“An Unusual Love Story” David+Lisa is an intense fairy-tale-of-sorts that tells the story of two people who meet in a mental institution. After a series of events an unlikely attachment is developed between the two volatile individuals. The true lives of David and Lisa have also been the subject of a fact-based psychoanalytic story, a stage play, and a 1960s film. Scorpius is the first to abstract their lives into the realm of contemporary dance.

This production promises to be as enlightening as it is entertaining complete with original music by Kris Hill and Ryan Breen, Original choreography by Lisa Starry, and the exclusive physical narrative of this peculiar love story…a story that suits the company’s idiosyncratic brand of performance very well.

Celebration of Dance is Arizona’s contribution to this national campaign and was created by Helena Saraydarian, a dance industry professional; choreographer, teacher, and producer. Upon enlisting as Arizona’s delegate for National Dance Week, Miss Saraydarian sensed the need to create a
venue for the dance community to get involved in and for the public to enjoy the creation and the performances of Arizona’s dance artistry.

Golden Lion Productions, Inc. - takes on the task of producing these events. Two years after the launch of the first (April 200) Celebration of Dance, Miss Saraydarian formed this non-profit (501 c 3) volunteer organization serving the community with creative and educational projects and opportunities. A production team is formed each year to help: creative and technical theater professionals and a group of volunteers.

A nationwide search is launched each year for dancers, professional dance companies, and non-
professional yet unique performing groups. The dance community is invited to submit their work by a live audition or a video submission. From all the entries a selection is made by a committee who consists of professional individuals who are active in the dance industry. The result, a wide-range of thrilling and exciting performances by our very own Arizona artists and an exciting display of creative expression for the public to enjoy.
